Downtown real estate offices merge, join franchise

Written by Lily Leung

Two local residential real estate companies that were once downtown competitors have merged and joined an industry franchise that has nearly 800 offices in the world, said partners in the deal this week.

Urban Real Estate Services and Realty Connex, both in downtown San Diego, are now part of Harcourts USA, the recent American expansion of Australia-based Harcourts International. The two San Diego firms paid an undisclosed fee to be part of the franchise.

The newly formed company, dubbed Harcourts Pacific Realty, handles residential and commercial deals, as well as property management.

The partnership began when Eric Jones, owner of Urban Real Estate Services, and Suzen Sarko, owner of Realty Connex, recently decided to join their offices and seek out franchising options to grow their business. Sarko learned of Harcourts through one of her agents and her interest was piqued.

Sarko and Jones thought the franchise would be a good ft because of similar philosophies and Harcourts’s focus on customer service.

“The company had the tools, technology and training, and really brought back the opportunity to have fun in the business again,” Jones said.

Both also said joining a franchise with global connections could help their company attract foreign buyers, who aren’t strangers to the San Diego real estate market.

“We can get listings to almost 800 offices,” Jones said.

Harcourts Pacific Realty, the new firm, became official about a month ago. It has roughly 30 employees, but there are plans to hire 10 to 20 more agents, they said. The partners, who also include Sherman D. and Becky Harmer, also plan to expand into North County.

Harcourts currently has 17 U.S. franchises, 15 in California and two in Nevada, said Aaron Hodson, CEO of Harcourts USA. The international firm entered the American market about a year ago. This is its first time entering the metro San Diego market
